Grass Gran's protest plansApr 1 2007

By Phil Doherty, The Sunday Sun

A grandmother prosecuted for growing cannabis for self-medication is to lead a protest in London supporting the right of people to use the drug for health reasons.

Patricia Tabram, 68, said she expected hundreds of elderly, disabled and sick people to take part.

She said: "We are planning to take 300 cars with four people in each to London and block a very important area to cause as much chaos to MPs as we can.

"We are going to be there all day and sit there until they listen to us and take our concerns seriously.

"The people who are going to take part are all either elderly, disabled or sick who want the right to grow cannabis in their homes or take it as a medicine.

"We are sick of being ignored and victimised for taking a drug that helps us."

Mrs Tabram, who is a member of the Legalise Cannabis Alliance, has refused to say when the day of action is to take place.

The mother-of-three has vowed to carry on using the drug, which she says is more effective and less harmful than the prescription drugs she took to combat the depression she has suffered since her 14-year-old son died in the 1970s.

She also says it helps her with the aches and pains resulting from two car accidents.

Mrs Tabram first came to the attention of Northumbria Police when it was alleged she supplied the drug to elderly and ill people in cakes, casseroles and curries.

Following her prosecution last month, when she was sentenced to 250 hours community service for growing the drug at her home in Humshaugh, Northumberland, she was threatened with eviction by her landlord, Milecastle Housing.

However, after a board meeting, Milecastle Housing decided to apply to the courts for a possession order, suspended for two years, that will allow Mrs Tabram to remain at the address as long as she does not cultivate, possess or use cannabis in the property.

May we all help her, as she is a true cannabis campaigner, who makes me feel proud to know, as a friend.

UK: Cannabis Gran faces eviction

Source: The Journal, UK
Date: July 4 2007
Author: Paul James

---
SO-CALLED ‘Cannabis Gran’ Patricia Tabram is due in court again on Friday, when she could face eviction from her Northumberland home.

In March, the 68-year-old, of East Lea, Humshaugh, near Hexham, was found guilty of growing and using the Class-C drug, which she insists she uses for pain relief.

Now bosses at housing association Milecastle Housing have applied for the right to evict her – but have asked for the order to be suspended so she can have another chance.

They say Mrs Tabram is in breach of her tenancy agreement by growing and using the drug. She says she does not understand why she is being targeted, arguing: “I’m not a robber, I’m not a rapist.”

Alun Buffry, spokesman for the Legalise Cannabis Alliance, yesterday said: “True enough, the Misuse of Drugs Act puts the onus on landlords to ensure illegal drugs are not used on their premises, and Mrs Tabram, rightly or wrongly, has been convicted under that Act.

“However, I don’t feel for one minute that many people would think that the Misuse of Drugs Act was ever supposed to be used against pensioners who grow a plant, even cannabis, for their own medical benefit, especially in such tiny quantities – and certainly not to be used to evict them.”

Bill Tebay, managing director of Milecastle Housing, said: “It is with reluctance and regret that Milecastle Housing has applied for a possession order on the home of Mrs Patricia Tabram, which we have recommended to be suspended for up to 24 months.

“If a suspended possession order is granted by the courts, Mrs Tabram may continue to reside in her home, unless she breaches her tenancy agreement through the cultivation or possession of cannabis – offences for which she was convicted in the criminal court.

“We have spoken with Mrs Tabram on several occasions in order to make it absolutely clear that whilst we have no wish to repossess her home, we are required, as a responsible social landlord, to take action in such cases and would be prepared to do so.”

Gran wins cannabis home use row

Patricia Tabram said the judgement vindicated her way of life
A grandmother convicted of growing cannabis at her Northumberland cottage, can continue using the drug at home.
Patricia Tabram, 68, from Humshaugh, was found guilty in March of possessing and cultivating cannabis, which she says is used for pain relief.

Her landlord, Milecastle Housing, said she was in breach of her tenancy agreement and threatened to evict her.

But after a court hearing in Newcastle, Mrs Tabram was told she could continue to use cannabis treatments in her home.

However, Milecastle Housing warned that if Mrs Tabram was convicted for either cultivating or supplying the drug in the next two years, she would be evicted.

Mrs Tabram claimed the decision was a victory for her way of life.

I will be taking my medicine five times a day to be pain free 24 hours a day

She said she would continue to take cannabis medicinally - but would no longer attempt to cultivate the drug at home.

Mrs Tabram appeared at Newcastle County Court, after the housing association sought permission to evict her for breaching her tenancy agreement.

Bill Tebay, chief executive of Milecastle Housing, said after the hearing: "If she is convicted of supply or cultivation, we will take action.

"The judgement as it stands means that we will not be taking action if she uses cannabis in her premises.

Walking sticks

"But it is important to note that this judgement is specific to her and that Milecastle Housing have got a very specific policy about illegal use of drugs in its premises."

Mrs Tabram said: "I will be taking my medicine five times a day to be pain free 24 hours a day.

"That means I don't have to go down the route of using two walking sticks, having a neck brace or having to be looked after by home helps."

Mrs Tabram was arrested in 2005 when police raided her bungalow.

She was in breach of a six-month suspended jail sentence when officers, acting on a tip-off, found cannabis plants and growing equipment in a walk-in wardrobe.

She was subsequently convicted at Carlisle Crown Court.
