ENTERING Corto Moltedo's showroom is like stepping on to the set of a hip-hop video. There are turntables; a visiting New York DJ; impossibly stylish women wafting around; a waiter proffering drinks beneath a gigantic chandelier; and enough bling in the form of expensive shoes, jewellery and accessories to impress a rapper's posse.
But this is Paris's snooty 8th arrondissement. And Moltedo, despite the chunky gold crooked ''C'' necklace dangling from his neck, is a scion of European fashion royalty who wants to sell handshoes not rap records.
His parents Laura and Vittorio Moltedo founded the Italian luxury goods house Bottega Veneta in 1966 , and he grew up between Milan and New York.
At 28 Moltedo is channelling his transatlantic heritage and dynastic design impulses into his eponymous brand of shoes, jewellery and accessories designed, as he says, for the ''chick'' who ''wants to have it''.
After only a few seasons showing in Paris, his selection of day and evening shoes with names such as Priscilla and Susan, in goat skins, minks, and suede have already won fans at some of the world's most style-conscious department stores. Tiny evening shoes in mother of pearl or purple python come attached to studded wrist bands for the woman who doesn't want to lose her essentials while she is dancing at the hottest new nightclub.
Corto Moltedo shoes can be found at Selfridges in London, Tokyo's top department stores and soon Le Bon Marche in Paris. They are often displayed alongside the latest Chloe or Christian louboutin (...) , and larger shoes such as the Cowgirl or Priscilla can retail for more than $2010. The designer has quickly attracted a devoted following among the fashion crowd in Japan and Italy, where Vogue Italia named him as a finalist in its search for the new generation of Italian fashion designers.
